AI Drone Swarms Fight Wildfires: UK Fire Service Trial

A fire service trialling drone swarms is a multi-agent system with the comfortable parts removed. These drones are not answering questions; they are deciding where to put a hundred kilos of retardant, in weather, at the same time as each other. None of it is undoable, and none of it waits while somebody reads a log.

Most teams running software agents will never carry that much consequence, but they inherit both problems in miniature: several agents acting at once, and a decision you have to reconstruct afterwards from what each of them could see at the time. The coordination is the hard part, not the model. Which is why the useful question about any swarm, physical or otherwise, is not how autonomous it is — it is who was asked before the irreversible step, what they were shown, and whether the record survives the incident.
