WhatsApp Removes AI Watermark: SynthID Flaw Explained

Watermarking is provenance attached to an artefact, and an artefact can be cropped, re-encoded, screenshotted or stripped. Each flaw found is a reminder that the property we actually want — knowing where something came from — is hard to carry inside the thing itself.

The durable version lives one level up, in the system that produced the output: which agent generated it, on which task, under whose approval, at what time. That record cannot be stripped by re-encoding because it was never inside the file. For teams running agents it is the difference between hoping a mark survives and being able to answer the question directly.
